Utah's public education system plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our society by nurturing young minds and preparing them for the challenges of tomorrow. To stay competitive in an ever-evolving world, it is imperative that Salt Lake City School District’s education practices align with those of more innovative and successful programs across the country. By embracing new teaching methods, incorporating cutting-edge technologies, implementing creative budgeting, and fostering a culture of inclusivity, creativity and critical thinking, Salt Lake City School District can empower its students and teachers to thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Investing in our education system will not only benefit individual students, but also contribute to the overall growth and success of the district. It is time for the Salt Lake City School District to prioritize innovation and excellence in education to ensure a brighter future for generations to come and it is my goal to help us get there.

I have children in the Salt Lake City School district and started our SLCSD experiences in the fall of 2012. So, 12 years into it, we have had school experiences in multiple schools in the district including; Highland Park elementary, Hawthorne elementary, Ensign elementary, Washington elementary, Clayton middle school and Highland high school.
Through my children, I have directly experienced the neighborhood ELP program, the honors courses, the neighborhood courses and the special education programming. The good, the bad and the ugly of them all.
Through helping other families, monitoring and participating in board meetings, asking clarifying questions, and researching the issues I have learned much much more about the district...

Several years ago, several parents of students with disabilities in the SLCSD school district gathered together to support each other through their journeys in this district. We share the common goal to create initiatives and quality programming to better serve our vulnerable population. Unfortunately special education still tends to equate to siloed education for the child and for the family, so there is much more to do...
There is a misconception that programs that receive special funding, like special education, are adequately funded. The problem with that mentality is it fails to recognize that when the main system isn't funded well, no program is funded well. It's time to quit making programs stand on their own legs. The funding and the district needs to ensure every single program has the means and support they need to be successful. If we are to serve ALL students well, we need to actually serve ALL students well.
"Throughout the years I have known Amanda, she has shown consistent and persistent passion in advocating for the quality education of ALL children. She works collaboratively and with an earnest passion to always learn and grow, and she continually pushes for positive outcomes for all students in this ever-changing educational system. "
"Amanda works hard to ensure every student receives a quality inclusive education especially but not limited to student's with disabilities.
She uses her grassroots leadership to bring parents and other stakeholders together across SLCSD for meetups to problem solve and advocate for students with disabilities. She works towards ensuring policy that is a good fit for all students not just the majority. She is persistent in asking the important questions that shift big picture decisions into a well thought out plan for all students."
" Amanda has shown unwavering commitment to education inclusivity. Her personal experience as a parent of a child with a disability helps drive her passion for creating an inclusive environment in all SLCSD schools.
Beyond advocacy, she has excelled in educating other students about disabilities. In her own time, she has gone class to class, educating students about a disability that society can be uninformed about. By demystifying this, she fosters understanding and empathy among students. Her approach not only promotes inclusivity but also enriches the educational experience for everyone, not just her own children.
As a parent myself, I am personally grateful to have her as an example of tireless dedication to advocating for our children. I am confident that her genuine dedication and innovative approach will greatly benefit our school community."
"Amanda is a dedicated parent, an active and vocal advocate for the special needs community and her passion for including and working with ALL students in the education system is both admirable and unrivaled. I wish her every success!"
"I have known Amanda Longwell for more than 20 years. If you want someone to cut through the politics and fight for your child's education, Amanda is the person to do it. She knows the issues that we face with our education system and is determined to improve and fight for the educational rights of our children."
"Amanda is a fierce advocate for all children in the Salt Lake School District because when we support the inclusion of underserved children we support all children. I have seen first hand how passionate she is and she would be an incredible member of the Salt Lake City District Board."
